Medjugorje is a tiny village in Bosnia & Herzegovina but welcomes thousands of pilgrims each year looking to visit its main religious sites and meet the visionaries. Today we share the main things to do in Medjugorje and other places of interest for pilgrims in the area:
1-Saint James Church
Saint James Church is one of the main spiritual centres of Medjugorje, where pilgrims and visitors can attend prayers and masses in different languages throughout the day. Confession is also offered to pilgrims in different languages.
2-Cross Mountain
Climbing the Way of the Cross to Mount Krizevac, or Cross Mountain, is one of the top things to do in Medjugorje for devout pilgrims.
Pilgrims take a rocky and steep track to the top of the hill, which is approximately 1km from Saint James Church and 300 metres in terms of elevation.
Some pilgrims walk the path barefoot or on their knees. It is a great place to spend some time reflecting, while enjoying the views of Medjugorje town below.
3-Apparition Hill
The Hill of Apparitions, near Podbrdo village, is the site where Our Lady first appeared to the children in 1981. The hill is one of the main places of devotion for pilgrims in Medjugorje who walk the 2km-long path to the Statue of Mary ‘Queen of Peace’.
Like Cross Mountain is also rocky and steep so make sure you pack comfortable walking shoes.
At the base of Apparition Hill, pilgrims gather at the Blue Cross, where Our Lady appeared to the children.
4-Apparition Time
Each evening, pilgrims gather for Apparition time to receive the blessing of Our Lady, taking place for a few minutes at 5.40pm in the winter and 6.40 pm in the summer.
5-Meet the visionaries
Mirjana, one of the six visionaries of Medjugorje, now has apparitions on the second day of each month and pilgrims can join her to witness this extraordinary event at the Blue Cross.
Pilgrims can also join Ivan’s prayer group that gathers on Monday and Friday nights. The prayer group meets on the mountain when Ivan is in Medjugorje, generally between the months of April and September.
The group was started by Ivan and Marija back in 1984 to pray and sing with other young people in anticipation of Our Lady’s apparition.
6-Relax at Kravice Waterfall
Kravice Waterfall is a beautiful natural spot approximately 15kms from Medjugorje and a very popular place for swimming and picnics in the Summer months. It is a lovely place to visit if you are spending a few days in Medjugorje.
7-Explore Dubrovnik
Medjugorje is located only a couple of hours drive away from Dubrovnik (about 120kms); in fact Dubrovnik is one of the closest airports and you are likely to be flying in and out from here.
Combine your pilgrimage to Medjugorje with a couple of days in Dubrovnik to explore this beautiful UNESCO listed city on the Adriatic.
