THE STORY OF MEDJUGORJE

The story of the Medjugorje apparitions dates back to June 24, 1981, when six children encountered the Virgin Mary while playing in the hills near their village, their names were Ivan, Jakov, Marija, Mirjana, Vicka and Ivanka.

According to their accounts, they saw a radiant woman holding a child in her arms, who they identified as the Blessed Virgin and had a message of peace. These apparitions of Our Lady of Medjugorje, also known as Queen of Peace, still take place today.

Central to the Medjugorje apparitions are the messages attributed to the Virgin Mary. These messages, conveyed through the visionaries, emphasize prayer, fasting, reconciliation and faith in God. They call on humanity to turn away from sin, embrace love and forgiveness, and strive for spiritual renewal. Over the years, countless pilgrims have been inspired by these messages, finding solace, guidance, and renewed faith in their lives.

Saint James Church and Apparition Hill are the two main places of worship at Medjugorje. Apparition Hill is often climbed by pilgrims visiting the sanctuary and, along the path, a wooden cross marks the site where the Blessed Virgin made the first call to peace in 1981.

Pilgrimages to Medjugorje have been authorised by the Vatican since 2019.
