On the trail of the Irish Soldier | Dardanelles Campaign. The Gallipoli campaign took place between February 1915 and January 1916 in an effort to take the Dardanelles from the Turkish Ottoman Empire, an ally of Germany and Austria. Considered a disaster with far-reaching effects in all the countries involved, the battle claimed the lives of circa 3.500 Irish men. This beautiful area, a five hour drive from Istanbul is a must see for those interested in Irish history and who want a flavour of the Turkish culture.
